Life at Springworks: A Day In The Life Of A Software Development Engineer

Born in Bihar, Shilpa thrived her days in Bangalore’s buzz. From the Ganges to the Silicon Valley of India, Shilpa has spent her days hustling and travelling. She moved to Delhi after her marriage and currently resides in Poland. Shilpa has completed her engineering in electronics and communication. Whenever she gets time, she takes her cycle and explores the streets of Poland. At Springworks, she started her journey as an intern and now she works as a software engineer for Trivia.

Let’s have a look at her journey!

My journey at Springworks

I am no techie and I just had one subject on coding during my undergraduate days. Moreover, I had previously worked at organisations where my role was related to electronics and communication. When the pandemic hit, everything came to a standstill. I decided it would be the right time to pick something new and explore further. During the lockdown, I learnt basic programming and coding and I interned at a company. Later on, I joined a course on upGrad that was related to front-end development. After I completed my course, I received a placement opportunity and luckily I got placed at Springworks.

My entire hiring process was taken care of by Bhargavi. She took me through the entire process and what would be the next steps. The interviews were great and I wasn’t nervous during the call as I had a good rapport. Arpitha was very patient and she helped me gain a better understanding of my work and culture at Springworks. From my first interview call to my first day at work, everything was seamless. I didn’t have to reach out to anyone as I had all the information and steps. Kudos for introducing buddy and manager meetings, they were really helpful. The HR team provided me with an excellent induction, which was followed by a team introduction. Springworks really creates everything from a user’s perspective.

I started my journey at Springworks by working on the SVIN employment tool. Personally, I learnt a lot from Malkeet, Himani, Ayush and Arpitha who were there for me in my initial days. Then I worked on unit testing for SpringScan and The Yard Project. Later on, I was assigned to Toro and now Trivia. I have worked on a couple of projects to date and everything had its own challenges and learnings. It made me feel better every day. Amidst all, Toro was challenging as it was complex. But when I reflect back, all these projects have led to both personal and professional development. Springworks has given me the opportunity to explore something new and learn new ways.

The transition from a non-tech to a tech background is stressful but people at Springworks have been patient and kind as they have helped me to settle. Irrespective of what team and project I have been a part of, I have received a lot of guidance and support. The journey has been pleasing and wholesome so far.

What do I do at Springworks?

I work as the front-end developer for Trivia. As a developer, I work on styling for different versions and operating software. Apart from this I also work on the setup, revamping and modifications for Trivia on the web, teams and Slack connect. I also look after the UI, bugs, and logic changes.

Why do I love working at Springworks?

It’s definitely the killer combination of remote work and flexible working hours. Recently, I shifted to Poland and when I was in the process of shifting I was still an intern here. I told the team that I would be relocating and we discussed all the possible challenges that can arise. A sense of doubt was there at the back of my head about whether I would be getting a full-time role. But to my surprise, I received a full-time offer from Springworks and we addressed the challenges of my relocation. My team has been very supportive in the process and I am able to manage my work despite working in a different time zone. We try to work together and organise informal sessions.

I work from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Central European time which is 11 am to 8 pm in India. There are days when I extend my work based on the tasks I have. I do have Trivia standup calls twice a week and team lunches twice a month and there’s always someone to help me when needed.

The reimbursements and benefits at Springworks have really helped me to settle down in Poland. It’s great that my food bills and internet are accepted despite it not being in Indian rupees. I am able to have friends over and explore restaurants in Poland due to these benefits. I have used the workation benefits and explored places in Europe.

The work culture is very good. I like the initiatives and policies we come up with that help us to ace remote work. Everyone is approachable and helpful. I can DM Kartik or my manager and I would receive a reply in minutes. Asynchronous communication has really helped me to work and get more productive. We are free to explore and experiment with work as I find no barriers to curiosity or creativity here.

I have managed to develop a good bond with my teammates here. There are a lot of informal sessions and team lunches which help me to understand my team and also unwind from work for a few minutes.

Every year we come up with something new or innovative. It’s been fun working at Springworks. Albus has become my favourite AI teammate. Moreover, I always feel excited and happy every time I receive points from EngageWith. It’s been a great experience so far and hopefully, I can join all of you in an offsite.

Sneak-Peek into my life outside Springworks!

While I stayed in Bangalore, I had a moped and I used to explore the city and travel to places nearby. I love travelling and visiting new places. As soon as I came to Poland, I got a bicycle and I go for a ride whenever there’s time. On some days after work, I go for a walk or hit the gym. On the weekends, I either have a relaxing day at home or board a train and visit the beach/party places nearby. I have explored cities outside Poland and this year I would love to explore the cities of Poland.
